The 491 art gallery & exhibition space.

The 491 gallery is an incredibly versatile place. We offer a space for artisits of many different mediums to exhibit their work in a completely unique exhibition space in East London.

Over the years we have had a diverse and exciting range of art displayed here, some of which can be seen in our 'exhibitions history' & 'artist @ 491' sections of the website.

From budding young artists finding a space viable for them to exhibit for the first time, end of year exhibitions for students (inc St. Martins), to those a little more established in the artistic community, we offer, quite simply, a space for artists to canvas their message.

The exhibition space, as with all projects here at 491 was put together with recycled materials & the kind donations & time & effort of the communities volunteers.

Exhibitions @ 491 Gallery.

Since Oct 2001 the 491 Gallery has played host to artists from places as far flung as Australia, Korea, Iran, Austria, Germany and the UK. The artists who have exhibited with us have gone on to show their work to critical acclaim around the world.

We have seen spiritually uplifting paintings, photorealistic portraits. archeological photography and the movement of light.
Cityscapes have grown on our walls, decayed and crumbled within the month- sound has sculpted the room into a completely alien territory whilst life drawing hangs outside.

We have had the cutting edge in conceptual artistry and experimental art forms gracing the Gallery, giving us all new ideas and food for thought. Coupled with this we have played host to some of the original artists of the Stuckist movement, whose doctrine is to celebrate technical ability whilst remaining true to life within the 2D frame.

The standard of work has been truly incredible, in all cases really reflecting the independent and free-spirited nature of the 491 Gallery and it's patrons. Performance pieces, installation, sculpture and fine art sit side by side within the 491; a juxtaposition that works in such a versatile space where every artist and art form is equally valid.

In the coming months we have a varied and exciting range of exhibitions in which we introduce new sculpture; paintings without paint; the human condition through photography, fashion design with an ironic twist and much more to be confirmed- all at the 491 Gallery, which is already in the enviable position of beginning to feel too small for the ambitions of our artists.
