491 - The regeneration story.
There are too many individuals to thank personally for all
the years of contribution, but anyone who has ever come to the project and
wielded spade, fork, paintbrush, video camera, or indeed has contributed a
piece of artwork, exhibited, shared knowledge through a workshop, donated a
plant...the list goes on. You all know
who you are, and we couldn’t keep it up without you. Thank you.
The 491 Gallery is a true ' regeneration project' 2001 - 20??
The very project that stands today, the way it has been built, fixed & fitted, is a testament to everybody who has helped, in any way, shape or form, the regeneration of this once misused & derelict set of buildings in east London.
Almost everything the project has needed in terms of regenerating could or can be found second hand or via donation, in the skips of east London & beyond etc.
We truly believe that the percentage of materials from reused, free sources etc we use here at the 491 Gallery could be even higher with the right kinds of approach & planning.
The UK throws out anything & everything ... Sometimes a good fridge might be found ... sometimes a peice of timber ... etc. Almost anything you could think of, might pop up one day ...
If you look, you will find. And sometimes, If you ask .. you will get it.
Also the unbelievable kindness from friends of the project & the donations & help we have received has been the backbone of the project being able to create such a wonderfull community space.
Big jobs, little jobs, .... nooks & cranies ...
Every little thing thats been done has been a step up the ladder towards a vibrant regenerated community space in east London, A once a feared black spot in Leytonstone.
How do we do it? Its all been achieved by volunteers, hard work & great kindness.

Oct 2001: - The Begining.
YES! - thats what we like to say.
Be creative - sing it out loud, with paint, chissel or voice
We must express ourselves, it's in our nature.
Since the earliest days of the 491 gallery, when the
building was run down & only half of it was useable, there have been
creative endeavors aplenty occurring within the projects walls.
From the beginning we have been a meeting place
for artists, musicians and people dedicated to a more socially conscious
lifestyle - being creative!
The project has always hosted
exhibitions and workshops, and in the past has been used as an independent
cinema (Vertigo, named after the classic Alfred Hitchcock film).
Now we have created such a beautiful and
diverse garden we also attract budding young conservationists and
green-fingered folk who all work to keep the garden looking beautiful and to
cultivate new wildlife and ecosystems.
